DelReyWoodsLarge87_701x466.jpgOur school achieved its schoolwide Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) target benchmark in mathematics. AYP target benchmarks were also met for the Hispanic and socioeconomically disadvantaged student subgroups. Staff has developed a 2010–2011 School Plan to effectively help students reach their targeted AYP goals in language arts. Our English Learner population also met federal test score English proficiency goals. Sidewalks and SIPPS assessment data showed evidence of significant growth for students participating in our intensive reading intervention.

Teachers and support staff have continued to work extremely hard in helping students achieve their specific grade-level content requirements. Our daily small-group reading intervention programs are helping our students significantly improve. All of our classroom teachers have completed district-funded training to help them effectively implement instruction and assessment in language arts and math. The principal, who has completed the administrative version of the teacher training in professional development for math and reading, also participated in the language arts training scheduled during 2010–2011.

During this school year, our staff also used special-purpose funds to hire a bilingual liaison leader for the purpose of supporting the needs of at-risk children and families. The assistant in this program also pro- vided motivational activities and rewards for students who demonstrated consistent attendance and noteworthy academic and citizenship accomplishments. This coincides with the 2010–2011 implementation of the Positive Behaviors, Interventions, and Supports (PBIS) program, a district-supported program to help build school community and develop schoolwide behavioral expectations in positive ways.

DelReyWoodsLarge56_701x466.jpgA partnership was also formed between DRW and California State University of Monterey Bay (CSUMB). One professor, Dr. Scott Waltz, committed to sending the students of his Introduction to Teaching course to our school to provide them with a common experience of doing their service learning at one particular school. As a result, service learners received an authentic experience working with individual students or small groups, and they also effectively reduced the adult/student ratio in classrooms.

This year, our third grade teachers and students continued to enjoy their Farm Day experience at the Monterey Fairgrounds. Our fifth graders performed in a schoolwide orchestra for parents and the community. One of our visually impaired students placed second in a statewide Braille competition in San Francisco. Finally, Del Rey Woods was adopted by the Pebble Beach corporation, who raised money and provided a Beautification/Clean-up Day on April 9, where the campus was cleaned and beautified in col- laboration with the PTA and many of our parents and families.
