Elaine Colina

Welcome to our website! Let me tell you a little about myself. I grew up in Santa Barbara. Then as a teenager I traveled to South America with a junior peace corps type program to vaccinate children for measles. After that I began teaching in a small school in the Guatemalan cloud forest for 6 years. When I returned I began teaching Kindergarten 2, 3 and 4 grades while raising my 2 children. We moved here 16 years ago and I've enjoyed teaching 2 and 3 grades here ever since.

Favorite subject/thing to teach

It is so hard to choose between all the subjects but the stories we are reading are the heart of each days learning. The math breakthroughs of understanding are some of the highlights of the week.

Most memorable experience at Del Rey Woods

One year in Science we were studying the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. Just as the whole class was gathered around the cocoons one of the butterflies began to break out of the cocoon and spread its wings. It was so exciting for all of us. Some of the most peaceful and harmonious moments have been while teaching watercolor painting and sketching. The students are so completely absorbed in the creative moment that it inspires me in my own art.

Favorite book

Phillip Pullman's Triology of The Golden Compass is a wonderful read, but I have too many favorites.to list here
